Engine: Gardner 6LX, 150 hp @ 1700 rpm, 120 hp @ 1500 rpm, naturally aspirated 6-cylinder diesel. Cylinder capacity: 10,450 cc.

"What made Gardner unique was that most of the components, even the fuel pumps and sprayers, were all cast and fabricated in-house to standards of the utmost quality. Gardner used separate cast-iron cylinder heads as well as blocks, but fitted this to a cast alloy crankcase. The crankshaft main bearings were not only located and supported vertically in the normal way, but also horizontally braced. This gave the bottom end of the engine phenomenal strength and rigidity with warranty claims being virtually unheard of. Reliability and durability were assured by means of sturdy construction and precision engineering. In the marine environment the 6LX for example was derated from its automotive output of 150hp @ 1800rpm to 120hp @ 1500rpm, meaning they almost never wore out. The recommended service periods included a decarb at 15,000 hours, with a rebuild not necessary until 100,000 hours, a figure many engines have surpassed several times over, and before which other diesels simply would have expired."
